Andrew is an experienced, compassionate psychologist based in Toowoomba providing psychotherapy to adults, adolescents, couples and older adults.

Andrew’s aim as a therapist is to create an inclusive and non-judgemental space for his clients that encourages curiosity, personal reflection, and growth. He is passionate about empowering his clients through evidence-based practices to explore possibilities and build a life with meaning.

He is experienced in treating a range of presentations and has a specific interest in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Trauma, Relationships, Existential Stress, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Anxiety.

Andrew’s approach is informed by humanistic and emotion-focused therapies, with a deeper component of existentialism underlying this. In short, Andrew holds to the belief that it is the ability to be radically honest within the therapeutic relationship that gives us the opportunity to reflect, heal and change. The deepest and most moving part of this is when we examine the role of meaning in our lives, and how to make our lives meaningful.

He acknowledges that speaking with a psychologist for the first time can feel daunting and reaching out for support may not feel easy. During your sessions together, Andrew will take every care to respect your comfort and space as you work together.

  • Andrew draws primarily from Person-Centred Therapy, an approach which is focused on empathy and positive regard. It is grounded in the thought that people naturally move towards growth and fulfillment, and the best support for this is an environment in which they can be open, honest and vulnerable. It is through this truthful reflection that a person can move away from self-defeating behaviours, and towards self-actualisation.

Andrew utilises a variety of evidence-based therapeutic methods to support his clients depending on their individual experiences and their goals including:

    • Person-Centred Therapy

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

    • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

    • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

    • Motivational Interviewing

Alongside Gottman and Psychobiological interventions, Andrew utilises a variety of evidence-based therapies to support couples depending on their goals:

    • Gottman Couples Therapy

    • PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy)

  • Creating Meaning:

Something that often doesn’t get discussed but has a huge impact on our lives is the sense of meaning each person has.

What makes life worthwhile? What does retirement, parenthood, old age, intimacy and death mean to a person?

I believe that the richness of a life can be measured through the answers we have to these questions – questions which are not typically openly discussed in our culture. I have a passion for helping people begin to formulate these questions and put forward their own answers.

    Reflection & Change:

To use an analogy, we build our life up from our experiences, which we lay like bricks.

At the best of times they stack neatly to form a solid sense of ‘self’.

Sometimes our experiences are negative, confusing or traumatic, and these bricks don’t fit as well. As we keep stacking more on top it becomes clear that something is impacting the solidity of our sense of ‘self’. Some brick, somewhere, doesn’t fit.

This is where therapy can help.

Here we provide a safe place to gently examine these pieces and smooth down the ones which are causing personal pain. Through this we can ideally move from pain and uncertainty to solidity.

    Emotional Sanctuary:

My goal as a therapist is to provide a space which feels like your window in the week – a calming, non-judgemental space where we are able to let our defences down and allow radical honesty into our lives.

I aim to make therapy not seem daunting but instead something to look forward to, knowing that although we may discuss painful things that we’re moving through the pain and that you will be supported wholly in your journey.
